How much you actually need.
The usual mistake is ordering by area and forgetting depth and compaction. Type 1 consolidates as it is rolled, so the loose volume you order is more than the finished depth suggests.

- ✗A finished surface. It is a base course, not a wearing course
- ✗Drainage. Type 1 is designed to compact tight, so use gravel or clean stone where water has to pass through

The things people ask before booking.
As a rough guide, about two tonnes per cubic metre once compacted. Multiply your area by the depth you want, then allow for consolidation, because Type 1 tightens noticeably as it is rolled. Send us the dimensions and we will check the figure before you order rather than after.
Around 100mm for a domestic path or patio base, 150mm or more where vehicles will run over it, and deeper again on soft ground. If you are unsure what is under it, say so, because the ground conditions matter more than the surface use.
Loose tipped is cheaper per tonne and right for anything of size. Bulk bags cost more per tonne but land exactly where you want them, which wins when access is tight, the drive is block paved, or the material has to go through a house.
Not quite. Crushed concrete and 6F2 are recycled and usually cheaper, and for many sub-base applications they perform perfectly well. Where a specification calls for Type 1 by name, use Type 1. Where it does not, ask us and we will price both.
Yes, and it is the cheapest way to run the job. The wagon that brings the stone in takes the dig out, so you pay for one movement instead of two empty runs.
